The Afterburn Effect | May 2026

The objective:

Following the 2025 Gym Z study conducted in partnership with Differentology, Zoom Media returned to the gym floor to explore what happens once the workout ends. The Afterburn Effect set out to:

Understand the emotional and social role gyms play in members' lives

Explore how the post workout high shapes mood, confidence and motivation

Determine how this emotional window translates into openness to purchase

The research set out to quantify something many advertisers suspect but few can prove: that the gym does not just build bodies, it builds a measurably positive mindset that lasts well after the workout is over.

Key Insights

72% began their gym membership for emotional benefits

80% report being in a better mood after a workout, sustained into the next day

90% report being more or equally likely to buy after a workout

The Afterburn Effect shows gym advertising working with the grain of a gym-goer's mindset, not against it. Members leave the floor in an elevated, open and purchase-ready state, and that state holds for hours, not minutes, giving brands a longer and more receptive window than the workout itself.
